I've been selling real estate in Greater Victoria since 1992, so I've had the opportunity to watch Bear Mountain grow from its earliest days into the remarkable community it is today.
I Remember When Bear Mountain Was Just Beginning
Around 2000, I remember playing golf with a fellow member at Royal Colwood Golf Club who told me he had purchased a small townhouse development site from Len Barrie, one of the driving forces behind the original Bear Mountain development.
When he told me where it was, near the base of the mountain, I remember thinking, "Really? You think townhouses are going to sell out there?"
Those may be some of my favourite last words.
I watched those early developments take shape and Bear Mountain grow from what seemed like an ambitious idea on the Westshore into one of Greater Victoria's premier residential and resort communities.
Today, Bear Mountain real estate includes everything from condominiums and townhomes to newer single-family houses, golf course properties and spectacular luxury homes. What began as a relatively small development has become an important part of the Westshore real estate market.
What Buyers Should Know About Bear Mountain
One thing I've learned about Bear Mountain is that location within the community can make a significant difference. Elevation, sun exposure, views, nearby development and even which side of the mountain a property is located on can affect both the experience of living there and the property's appeal.
Some homes offer impressive views toward Greater Victoria, the ocean or the Olympic Mountains, while others overlook the golf courses or surrounding mountains. Two Bear Mountain homes that appear similar online can feel completely different when you actually stand on the property.
